Betas at Cordillera

Big thanks to Janelle for putting this together. For those who don't know Janelle, she is one of Tim's true buddies. They were house mates with Jay, Karen, and Dexter - there were others but not as tight as these 5. Janelle is our legendary Aussie sister that can tell you a million true stories about Tim. This Vancouver chapter was some of the funnest times of my life. Tim took us on endless mountain bike rides, monster fishing tours, and the most ultimate adventures.

Services will be Thursday and Friday for Timothy D. May who passed away suddenly on July 15, 2007 he was 39.
Tim was born in Grove, Oklahoma and grew up in Miami, Oklahoma. He graduated from Miami High School in 1985 and later attended University of Oklahoma where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Political Science. He moved to Santa Cruz in 2000 and worked in the technology industry in Silicon Valley. He later began working for UCSC where he was a program analyst supporting the Chancellors Office.
In his spare time he enjoyed surfing, playing Frisbee golf, camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Julianne May of Santa Cruz; two sons, Harrison T. May and Thomas M. May both of Santa Cruz; his parents, Thomas H. May of Afton, Ok and Kathleen May of Calgary, Canada; he also leaves his two brothers, Tony May of New Castle, CO. and Russell May of Orlando, FL.
Friends are invited to call at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga St, Santa Cruz, CA Thursday July 19 from 2 pm to 5pm and from 6:30 to 9 pm. A vigil prayer service will be Thursday evening at Pacific Gardens Chapel at 7pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church 126 High St, Santa Cruz, CA Friday July 20 at 12 noon. Interment will be in Santa Cruz Memorial Park.

Giant Pumpkin Garden Update
I finally got my two seedlings transplanted. I don't have high expectations for this year, I just hope they make it through the season. I know I have to lower the soil pH from 8.0 to the low 7's with some sulphur. I'll get a couple of backhoe buckets of cow manure next spring from Brett Jolley. My irrigation is automatic and I'm using buried soaker hose with both plants.

New Castle Fire - June 19, 2007

As of today, it's a 1,080 acre wildfire. There are 200 firefighters on the ground and air support of 3 helicopters, 4 slurry bombers and and a pilot plane. An impressive Sikorsky S-61 dumped water on hotspots, it was amazing how much steam would blanket the ground.

New Castle Fire - June 18, 2007
Mom and I were driving into Glenwood Springs when we saw smoke to the east. We stopped at the Melby's house where mom grabbed a hose to start soaking the area behind their house and I ran up the mountain to snap a few shots. The closer pics are in an area that is now charred. I was so close that I got splashed with water from the chopper. Carrie Melby said that the fire started from a lightning strike the night before and her husband was able to put the fire out with some firefighters. She and her son, Thor, went up this morning and pushed dirt onto the smouldering embers. Unfortunately the winds kicked up this afternoon and got the fire going. I helped Bud Gardner rescue his horses to safety. Only 2mp phone quality, better than nothing.

I tripled recipe for the top layer of chocolate. You should try this recipe, it's very delicious and easy to make. I think I'll try a variation in the top layer next time. I'll divide the top layer into 3 batches and I'll mix in kirsch to the middle layer.

Strawberry Days - 1969 Mustang
I met the owners of this Mustang and found out a fact that makes me sick. My first car was a 1969 Mustang convertible with a 351w and tilt steering, same as the car pictured above. What is unique about this package was that there were only 3900 made with the 351w, and with the tilt steering package, the car rolling today is worth over $70,000. I wish I still had mine.

Strawberry Days Grand Marshall - Levy Burris
Levy is a great guy, long time valley resident that loves cool classic cars and he is a buffalo rancher. He and his wife sell buffalo meat though their company Rising Sun Buffalo. He just recently took on the post of Chief of Police in Silt (Silt Happens) after 13 years with the Glenwood Springs Police Department. He also was a Garfield County deputy, investigator, and undersheriff. Prior to that he worked for Rifle PD and also served in the Marine Corps.

Pensacola Dam, Grand Lake Oklahoma

First of all, this is the lake where I grew up, we spent our time up on the Honey Creek arm by Melody Pt. and Ranch Resort. The dam was the first hydroelectric facility in the state and was built between 1938, and 1940. It spans over a mile (6,565 feet) across the Grand River Valley and holding back 43,500 acres of water that form Grand Lake O' the Cherokees. Current Pool elevation is 749.82 feet on Friday, 15Jun07, at this elevation the total amount of water stored in the lake is 1,907,820 acre-feet. The Minimum level of the lake is 741.97 feet where 1,535,709 acre-feet of water is retained. BTW, there are legendary giant catfish that live at the base of the dam.

Grand Lake Flooding at Monkey Island, OK
Tom and Cathy sent us this pic. Lots of debris in the water, hazardous for boaters and what we called "snakey" growing up. Click on the pic for a better view. The flood pool at the Pensacola Dam is expected to peak at 47 percent of capacity - putting the lake level about 5 feet above the conservation pool at 750 feet mean sea level. Currently, all of the dam's 21 15-foot (small) gates are open and approximately 100,000 cubic feet of water per second is passing through.

Lesson Learned: DO NOT PUT GAS IN A DIESEL CAR.
Luckily I didn't start the car because that would have added another $1000 to the bill.
I grew accustomed to look for a GREEN handle when filling up with diesel. Sinclair chose to use GREEN for Regular Unleaded. I submitted all my receipts to Sinclair and was denied reimbursement because the pump was clearly marked and there is no industry standard for fuel coloring schemes. Which is retarded. I can only suspect and blame a marketing idiot that drove the color scheme, the same one that won the Superbowl pool because they liked a teams colors. I know I should have read the pump before it was too late and I know it is buyer beware. I also know people get millions for slipping in their own vomit at Wal-Mart. Where is the justice?

We took the Debeque cuttoff up to Mesa to attend a graduation party for Plateau Valley kiddo's. Someone had smoked a bunch of pork and made some tastey sauce. We headed back to attend another BBQ in Silt with the Chavez's. Greg cooked up some excellent Elk sausage and brats. We then headed back home to rescue and feed the girls. I headed down to Bill Gibson's for a couple more beers and got my butt handed to me playing foosball. Busy day.

Chainsaw Repairman

I borrowed Mr. Greene's good chainsaw and broke the handle off the case. The new part only cost $180, ouch! It only took me a couple of hours to tear it down and rebuild. It was a pretty dirty job. Stihl 038AV, runs like a top. Btw, the only band i know that used a chainsaw as an axe is Jackal, I missed my metal calling.

Silt Dog Park

Me and my two dog faced girls met the Dorsey's and their dog faced girls at the Silt boat ramp too early on Saturday morning. The girls did very well swimming in the swift ice cold Colorado river. They met lots of other fun dogs and everyone got along. We love to swim! I can't wait for the water to warm up in July so I can go swimming with the girls.

These guys have been buddies since the earth was hot. Chuck and KR were in the same graduating class. Jerry and Chuck used to race snow machines up the Cline Tops road. Secret: Grow Seedlings with Gardenia Aroma
Our Gardenia is having fun watching these youngsters grab some roots. I'll need to transplant into much bigger pots today. I didn't realize these things would grow so fast. 630 has a bad leaf because Indy wanted to taste. I think it will be ok, the 630 is actually the larger of the two plants. Tim met the grower at Creekside, that's where these seeds were grown.

Adding a new zone for the pumpkin patch was relatively easy, the hard part was shelling out the $88 for parts. This new setup allows for me to expand the zones with minimal effort. I plan to install a retaining wall and plant some shrubbery maybe this year.

Seed Germination Heat Factory

My two power hungry Paxville xeons run at 135w to 150w each at about 2200 BTU/hr. That power consumption is pretty much old school for dual-core processores. To add to the heat generation, my monitors produce around 1100 BTU/hr. The new dual-core processors don't use half the power but are the same speed, less heat = faster processing.

You are looking at finned heat sinks that sit on top of the processors, the sinks are each enclosed in it's own green shroud. The backside of the shrouds each have their own huge fan that runs all the time. These procs are badass!

Giant Pumpkin Seed Germination
I filed the edges of the seeds lightly with a nail file. This allows moisture into the seed easier and makes it easier for the leaves to emerge from the shell without damage. I then soaked the seeds in warm water for an hour or two and sowed them 1"-2" deep into six inch peat pots filled with a seed starter mix. I sowed one seed on it's side, and the other with the pointed end down and watered the starter mix thoroughly. I provided the seeds with warmth by setting next to my computer to improve germination rates and speed the process.

1964 Cub Cadet 100

Close to mint condition, this will be my mini project this summer. It came with a mower deck and a snow plow. It was used most of it's life as a workhorse to maintain the Excel Power Companies Rifle facility. The snow plow assembely and mower deck are in need of a total rebuild with a sandblast to welding up some cracks to new parts to factory paint and new decals. I also need to sandblast the hood and repaint befor I can apply the decals. I'm looking for a gastank and cap and a new grill. I may even install some headlight if I can find them for the right price. Last weekend I drove it around the neighborhood, it pulled the hill in 3rd without any problems.

Giant Pumpkin Garden

I'm hoping to grow a pumpkin from a couple of seeds taken from the winner of the 2006 Santa Cruz County Fair. I'm not sure how Tim got his hands on these, but nice snag! The two seeds he gave are 630 Sprinsock and a 534 Albrecht DMG. Since our soil, if you could call it soil, is void of any known nutrients, I had to import a tandem load in from Basalt. By no means is it 'black dirt' but it's as close as I'll get on the western slope. I built a rock wall and installed the dirt. My next jobs are to germinate the seeds, run power up to the garden for the heat tape in the soil, and install a dedicated valve so the garden has it's own zone. I'll update the irrigation schematic soon.

These big cats usually follow the deer. This year the deer around our house have been scattered. Maybe that's a good thing because they haven't bothered our fruit trees. I hope the only big cat in our area is now gone. Someone hit a cat in front of Delle's school and it died nearby a little later. People reported they saw the same cat in West Glenwood, 15 miles away. My favorite airplane of all time. The wings are bent so the outer wing can provide lift as the plane is banking. This plane is at the Smithsonian Air Museum at Dulles. They have lots of cool stuff there, even the Enola Gay. So far, the only people that have defaced the plane are Americans, that's weird.

Miriam Jean Jans (Auntie Mimi)

November 22, 1941 - Feb 5, 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Miriam "Mimi" Jean Jans (nee Howells), beloved wife, mother and sister. She passed away suddenly on Monday, February 5, 2007 at the age of 65 years. After previously beating lung cancer, she succumbed to a rapid and unexpected onset of leukemia. Mimi was born November 22, 1941 in Calgary, AB. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband Dr. Ron Jans; her four beloved children Christopher (Shantelle), Wendy (Tyson), Jennifer (Toby), Michael (Tammy) and her three grandchildren William, Jackson, and Maya, who brought her such joy; and by her two sisters and four brothers Kiki (her twin), Elizabeth (Ken), Bill (Dianne), David, Chris (Karen), and Jim (Janice). She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews and by her brother-in-law Murray (Audrey). Mimi's faith and prayers were an important part of her life and she touched the lives of many people wit her kindness and her gentle, caring nature. She will be remembered by her family as the "Best Mom in the world!". We love you forever.

Too Cold to Fish
When ice chunks constantly bump into you and your eyelets freeze after a few casts, it's time to bail. I know the fish are out there, the Bald Eagles can't be wrong. Ted and I decided to take up fly tying to get to know the entomology of our local fishing holes. These two flys are good ones to fish right now, the smaller the better this time of year. I want to be able to tie the bugs I find when I'm out on the rivers rather than guess and go on a whim when I'm at the store. I used coper wire, thread on a 18 hook for the midge larva and chamois and peacock on a 14 hook for the caddis larva.

The house video system runs off of a Two Channel Modulator coupled with those IR Targets on each tv. It broadcasts the satellite system on channel 45 and the DVD player on channel 47. So, if you are in a guest room and want to watch a dvd, no problem, it won't interfere with us watching something off of TIVO.

A half a pound of butter, a gallon of icing, ok not a gallon, 4 hours of baking and decorating yielded 9 dozen confectionery delights. This years gang was Chandelle, Patty, Denise, Cassie, Jackson, and Katy. Jackson only had to wash his hands 3 times before giving up. We should have a few of these stored away in the freezer if you want to try one...

6th Grade Team Christmas Dinner
We were really happy when the Prime Rib turned out perfect. This was my first try at cooking a whole rib. Lindsey's Yorkshire pudding also turned out perfect, it was her first time to bake her grandmothers recipe. Everyone had a great time, a few conversations were loud enough that Julie gave us an earfull to let us know that she couldn't hear herself talk. Great group of people!

Xmas Dog Trick
We taught Gema to turn the tree lights on and off her first Christmas. We have a touch sensor (the gold tree) that's activated by a wet nose. Indy is a bit more of a challenge, she'll get it eventually. Today I heard them rough housing in the living room and when I went to spy on them, I found the tree lights were on.

Delle's Christmas Cactus
We were pretty surprised to find flowers on this cactus. We think it bloomed because we abused it this summer, not a lot of water or sun. We have another Christmas Cactus that grows well but has never bloomed. We have already been thinking evil thoughts? on how to make it bloom for next year.

Little Indy and I were attacked by a German Shepard. We both had to go to the ER. The Docs didn't want to stitch me or Indy because it increases the risks of infection.

Planting lots of Iris
Chandelle and her mom tended her mom's Iris garden and divided the rhizomes then replanted, something we'll need to do every 4 years. The peak time to divide is in the fall when the soil is still warm and the air has begun to cool. This allows disturbed roots to re-establish themselves without placing a severe demand to supply moisture to the leaves. Patty gave us a few bags of rhizomes for our house and we made a little rock garden on the south side of the lawn..

Mike Jans Hunting Report from Northern Alberta
Once again, a successful hunting season (4 years running!). Saw tons of black bears, Moose, Elk and of course mule deer. I shot this one from a tree stand -at 20 yards and dropped him on the spot. Mike Ukrainetz scored him at 163" so he's well into the Pope & Young record book (minimum 145). Had an awesome time and can't wait to go next year.

Denver Beer Fest 2006
It's not everyday I get to hang out with someone of rockstar status. It's safe to say that Chris was the mayor of the Beer Fest, he knew just about everyone on the vendor side. It seemed like people came out of the woodwork just to say hi - at times it seemed just short of asking for an autograph. Chris is a very respected Brewer by his peers and his past students. If you are ever in Kentuky, Scotland, or South Africa, try a pint of Kentucky Ale.

My Stapler
Going back to July 2004, I spent the summer with a defense contractor in Silicon Valley seated the next cube over from Thuan Do. This was his stapler. It's the same model that was issued to all employees about a decade ago. Unfortunately he was laid off that summer because the prehistoric system he supported was phased out. Basically he had only one customer to support and only once a quarter, on something that sounded like a TPS report. His character was very much like Milton Waddams of Office Space, the similarity was uncanny. Thuan's idiosyncrasies through the course of the day started with whistling what sounded like an ancient chinese tune then mumbling through the logic of being laid off or something, then cycling back to whistling and then mumbling. He once had a rant to himself about this stapler. I honestly could not believe what I was hearing, I sat back and listened to the Milton dejavu. I didn't ask, but it would be hard to believe that he has seen Office Space. Where ever you are, I hope you are doing fine Mr. Do. Your stapler is in good hands.
